From WisBusiness.com …

— The Wisconsin real estate market recovery that began in the third quarter of this year will continue into 2010, with gains of 15 percent expected.

That’s the forecast of Lawrence Yun, chief economist with the National Associaton of Realtors. He spoke recently to members of the Wisconsin REALTORS® Association in Waukesha and talked to a WisBusiness.com reporter later.

With a home-buying tax credit extended into next year, he forecasts a rush of buyers coming into the market by the time spring rolls around.

He says that will set the table for modest price increases and a broader economic rebound.

— A new survey from a Milwaukee-based group shows a majority of manufacturers are optimistic about a small economic uptick in 2010.

But they also believe further cost-cutting measures will continue to be implemented, with more than 40 percent expecting a pay freeze or a hiring freeze at their firms.

And roughly a quarter of the 1,000 firms surveyed by the American Society for Quality expect staff layoffs next year.

— Christmas trees are big business in Wisconsin, which grows more of them than all but four states.

But that business can be threatened by a grub that eats the roots of young trees, spoiling entire fields in one shot.

University of Wisconsin grad student P.J. Liesch is working to develop management practices that could cut those losses dramatically.

— Football season also means tailgating time. For many tailgaters, however, the prep and clean-up time cuts into their pre- and post-game fun.

The Wisconsin makers of “FlameDisk” have tried to do their part to make tailgating easier with a solidified ethanol pan that can be used in place of charcoal for grilling.

That idea has proven successful and FlameDisk is now sold across Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota and parts of Florida and the southeast United States. By spring 2010, SoloGear is looking for FlameDisk to be available at supermarkets, hardware stores and sporting goods stores nationwide. At around $5 per FlameDisk, it is comparable in price to charcoal.

SoloGear’s next project will be a portable grill with a triangular shape with 89 square inches of grilling space. There is also a lever on the side to raise or lower the FlameDisk to increase or decrease the direct flame. The bottom legs can be flipped up to save space while traveling.
