— The state’s unemployment insurance call centers will be closed today for a designated furlough day. The administration has ordered sixteen furlough days for state employees over the span of two years because of state budget troubles.

For unemployment claims today, the Internet claims site and automated phone system will still be in operation.

The department is recommending the online claims site because operator assistance will not be available for people using the phone system.

— A new study by the National Association of Manufacturers predicts economic problems for Wisconsin if the global warming legislation known as the “cap and trade” bill is passed by Congress and signed into law.

The study says Wisconsin could be hit hard because of its significant investment in coal-fired electricity and the state’s reliance on industries like papermaking and machinery manufacturing.

The study predicts Wisconsin could lose upwards of forty-thousand jobs by 2030 and could see electric rates rise by as much as 60 percent while natural gas prices go up by nearly 80 percent.

— The State Building Commission has given the final green light for the state to borrow nearly fifty million dollars to purchase two 14-car trains from a company based in Spain.

Gov. Jim Doyle says the approval puts WIsconsin ahead of others in positioning itself for stimulus funds to enhance the Chicago, Milwaukee and Madison corridor.

He predicts the routes would get heavy use once they’re in place, saying that the current Milwaukee to Chicago route is the most heavily used route outside of either coast in the United States.
