WisBusiness: Alumni association seeks grads to return to Wisconsin companies

By WisBusiness Staff

The Wisconsin Alumni Association’s Paula Bonner says a cooperative effort to match UW-alumni execs around the country with Wisconsin companies is progressing well.

Bonner told the monthly WisBusiness.com luncheon Monday at the Madison Club that the idea is to serve as a “matchmaker” between alumni looking to get back to Wisconsin and growing companies such as Epic and Covance. Surveys indicate some 60 percent of alums have an interest in coming back.

The effort, called Badger Career Network Alerts, is still in testing but should be running full speed by the fall, she said.

Badger Career Network Alerts is a joint project of the Wisconsin Alumni Association and Thrive, the economic development enterprise serving the eight-county Madison Region.

This is one of many outreach efforts by the Alumni Association, said Bonner, noting Facebook, Twitter as well as the still-popular alumni magazine.

“You’ve got to pop on a lot of cylinders,” she said, and be where alums are communicating.

Bonner also defended planned tuition increases at UW-Madison, saying UW’s tuition is low in comparison to other Big Ten schools and that UW-Madison Chancellor Biddy Martin’s plan ensures more “need-based” financing.

Student, in state and out of state, who are eligible for need-based financial aid and whose families earn $80,000 or less will receive grants to offset supplemental tuition charges that start at $250 per year for in-state students at $750 per year for out-of-state students.

In return, the UW cites several direct educational benefits of the increased tuition.

The next WisBusiness.com luncheon, in cooperation with Madison Magazine and the Madison Club, is scheduled for Monday, May 4 with state Commerce Secretary Dick Leinenkugel.
