A water resources official for the Kingdom of Jordan is the first speaker in the GEM Critical Issues International Seminar Series this academic year at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.

Susan Kilani, director of Resources Quality Protection for Jordan, will present “Water Resource Issues in Jordan: Facing Limits in an Arid Environment” at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 17, in the Dreyfus University Center Theater.

The event is free and open to the public. The series is sponsored by the Global Environmental Management Education Center, a center within the College of Natural Resources at UWSP.

Jordan’s already limited freshwater supply faces additional stress from urbanization, threats of pollution and climate change, according to Kilani. Her work includes developing groundwater and surface water protection plans and working with concerned partners to enforce laws and regulations to be included in national land use planning. She conducts research and watershed studies and is helping to develop a uniform methodology for watershed management in Jordan.

Kilani also works with academic institutions to strengthen ties between students and the environment, and with communities and stakeholders in each area to solve pollution problems through citizen involvement.

Kilani’s presentation will include time for audience questions.

Kilani is the first of four speakers scheduled to address this year’s theme for the GEM Critical Issues Series, “Serving Society for Sustainability.” More information about series speakers is on the web at http://www.uwsp.edu/cnr/gem.
