Orion Energy Systems: Delegation from South Africa visits Orion Energy Systems

Visit designed to explore opportunities, build bridges between people

MANITOWOC, Wis. — Orion Energy Systems Inc. (Nasdaq: OESX) on Monday hosted a delegation of Johannesburg, South Africa, civic and business leaders seeking alternatives to the city’s electricity woes.

The delegation was led by Consul Economic Charles Manuel, and included four others from the South African city of nearly 4 million residents. The group met with Orion’s President and CEO Neal Verfuerth, Kevin Crawford, Orion’s vice president of business development and governmental affairs, and Mike Potts, Orion’s executive vice president.

Orion is a leading power technology enterprise that designs, manufactures and implements energy management systems, consisting primarily of high-performance, energy-efficient lighting systems, controls and direct renewable products for commercial and industrial customers.

The focus of the delegate’s meeting at Orion was “to explore mutually beneficial opportunities and to build bridges between our people,” according to the conul’s office.

Johannesburg is currently considering options to help power the city, which is growing at a rate of nearly 2 percent annually. Its electricity infrastructure is more than 50 years old and is a growing concern of civic leaders. Energy efficiency is a focus in the city to potentially offset building new coal-burning power plants.

Orion’s technology is proven to permanently reduce electricity load because it uses half the electricity of traditional lighting technology, which in turn reduces load for the utility, reduces energy costs to the customer and decreases the amount of greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere.

In addition to Manitowoc, the delegates visited New York City, Chicago, Detroit and other Midwestern cities.

Orion has deployed its energy management systems in 4,387 facilities across North America. Since 2001, Orion technology has displaced more than 423 megawatts, saving customers more than $514 million and reducing indirect carbon dioxide emissions by 4.3 million tons. Orion’s technology was recently internationally recognized with a Platts Global Energy Award for the single most innovative and sustainable green technology of 2008.
