(MADISON, Wis.)—Clean, Responsible Energy for Wisconsin’s Economy (CREWE) on Friday praised the nine Wisconsin manufacturers that have committed to reducing their industrial energy intensity by 25% over the next ten years as part of the US Department of Energy’s new Save Energy Now LEADER Program.

Wisconsin is home to more than a quarter of the companies that have signed the pledge – far and away the most of any state in the country. Those firms include:

* BPM, Inc. – Peshtigo

* Briggs & Stratton – Wauwatosa

* Didion Milling – Johnson Creek

* Flambeau River Papers – Park Falls

* Manitowoc Grey Iron Foundry – Manitowoc

* Neenah Foundry – Neenah

* Quad/Graphics, Inc. – Neenah

* Thilmany Papers – Kaukauna

* ThyssenKrupp Waupaca – Waupaca

“It’s great to see this kind of leadership on reducing energy usage from so many of Wisconsin’s manufacturers,” said Thad Nation, executive director of CREWE. “This level of commitment shows that improving energy efficiency – as outlined in the recommendations of the Governor’s Task Force on Global Warming – makes not only good environmental sense, but good business sense as well.”

Legislation is currently being developed around the Task Force recommendations, which include the adoption of annual targets for increasing energy efficiency.

“These nine companies have already led the way in committing to make Wisconsin a national leader in energy efficiency, and our state needs to continue to build on their efforts,” Nation said.

CREWE is a coalition that formed to advocate meaningful change in energy policy consistent with the Governor’s Global Warming Task Force final report, which will have a positive impact on Wisconsin’s economic development and security while fostering job creation.

CREWE’s membership consists of Alliant Energy, EcoEnergy, Johnson Controls, Xcel Energy, C5•6 Technologies, Axley Brynelson, Madison Gas and Electric, Orion Energy Systems, Forest County Potawatomi Community, Wisconsin Energy Corp., Poblocki Sign Company, Emerging Energies of Wisconsin, MillerCoors, American Transmission Co., WPPI Energy, DTE Energy Services, and Kranz, Inc.

The coalition is dedicated to joining forces with other supporters to promote responsible policies that address climate change; create jobs; promote energy efficiency, reliability and independence; and mitigate the economic impacts of rising energy costs.
