“We are encouraged that so many Wisconsinites are choosing the convenience of electronic filing,” said Revenue Secretary Roger M. Ervin. “While filing tax returns isn’t something most of us look forward to, e-filing makes the process simple and ensures timely refunds.”
E-filing provides refunds in as few as five business days, deposited directly to a savings or checking account. It is available through DOR’s “Free-File” software, through off-the-shelf products and private vendor websites, through professional tax preparers, and at Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) sites across the state.
Filing on paper may mean an 8- to 12-week wait for a refund. While e-filing is more accurate, those who do file paper returns can avoid errors with these tips:
- Use black ink and print in legible block letters.
- Round off dollar amounts to whole dollars – no cents. Never use commas when filling in dollar amounts.
- Do not cross out entries – use correction fluid or start over. Always put entries on the lines provided, not to the side, above or below the lines.
- Review the entire return to ensure it is completely and accurately filled out, and sign it before sending.
Taxpayers seeking assistance can visit www.revenue.wi.gov or call DOR’s centralized customer service center at (608) 266-2772. VITA sites offer free tax return and Homestead Credit claim preparation for low- and moderate-income individuals and families. For the nearest VITA location, call 211.
