WisBusiness: Census data shows Wisconsin median household income up

The median household income in Wisconsin rose by 3.5 percent in 2006, far outstripping the national increase of seven-tenths of 1 percent, according to new U.S. Census Bureau figures.

For the Badger State, the median household income is now $48,772 – slightly above the comparable national figure of $48,201.

The city with the highest median household income is Madison, $50,171; followed by Waukesha, $48,386 and Appleton at $47,139. Milwaukee, with a poverty rate of 26.2 percent, had a median household income of $33,990

The census data also showed that Wisconsin’s poverty rate was 11 percent with 581,000 residents living in poverty, including 192,000 children. For the rest of the nation, the poverty rate is 9.8 percent.

The federal poverty threshold is roughly $20,444 in household income for a family of four with two children.
