State Grants Benefit New North Region

MENASHA, March 30, 2007 – Lieutenant Governor Barbara Lawton announced a $1.2 million grant today to help out-of-work residents in Northeastern Wisconsin train for and find new jobs.

“We want Wisconsin workers to know that the state stands behind them, especially when times are tough,” Lt. Governor Lawton said. “We know their work ethic, value their talent, and trust their resiliency.  We want to provide the fuel for them to move forward in new, promising careers.”

The grant will assist workers displaced from jobs at Tecumseh Power in New Holstein, Brillion Iron Works in Brillion, and Chilton Products in Chilton.

“Northeast Wisconsin’s educated and skilled workforce is certainly an attribute that sets us apart as a region,” said Jerry Murphy, Executive Director of the New North, Inc.  “Today’s grant announcement illustrates the importance and emphasis we as a region put on addressing the needs of both our region’s workers and the companies that employ them.”

The Fox Valley Workforce Development Board will help administer the program for job training, job search, and support services. The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development will also assist.
