Northwestern Mutual Celebrates 150th Anniversary

MILWAUKEE, March 27 /PRNewswire/ — Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance Company, one of the world’s most admired companies, begins celebrations this month of its 150th anniversary. In what will be a year-long campaign, the company will mark its achievements over the past 150 years as well as look to the future for its policyowners, employees, and representatives. As a part of the campaign, the company’s charitable foundation will contribute an additional $3.165 million to non-profit and community organizations across the country where its representatives serve clients.

“It’s a privilege to know that we’ve helped seven generations prepare for the future. Our employees and financial representatives are proud to be part of a company with a long history of helping people achieve financial security,” says Edward J. Zore, president and chief executive officer. “The promise we established 150 years ago is even more important as we look at a future where people will be living longer and have greater financial security needs.”

Northwestern Mutual was founded in 1857 by transplanted New York trader General John Johnston on a simple principle — to protect policyowners from life’s unknowns. Two years later, Johnston moved the company from Janesville, WI to Milwaukee, where it has grown over the last century and a half. Today Northwestern Mutual:

   — is ranked #116 on the Fortune 500;
— serves over three million policyowners, employs more than
5,000 people, and has more than 7,000 financial representatives;
— has $1 trillion of individual life insurance protection in force; and
— has been recognized by Fortune as the “Most Admired” life insurance
company for 24 straight years.

“Our anniversary celebration is about our policyowners, our representatives and employees, and just as important, the communities where we work and live,” notes Zore, the 16th president of what has become the market share leader of total individual life insurance premiums in the country. “Northwestern Mutual’s financial representatives and employees are proud to serve the communities where we do business, and the anniversary is an ideal time to reinforce that.”

In addition to the charitable campaign, the company has developed a historic museum at its downtown campus, featuring archaic policies including one from President Franklin Delano Roosevelt, an original policy stamp machine, a historic timeline, and much more. Additionally, the company will host several special events throughout the year for employees, community organizations and representatives.
