New scholarships established for business, music education students

WHITEWATER Two new scholarships have been established for those students
pursuing degrees in business and music education.

Richard F. James Marketing Education Scholarship

The Richard F. James Marketing Education Scholarship has recently been
announced in honor of retired professor Richard James.

James started at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 1978 and spent
his years as an information technology and business education professor
helping prepare future business and marketing teachers. James was well known
for his achievements both on-and off-campus. On campus he was selected twice
for the College of Business and Economics and University Service awards and
was also named the campus¹ Outstanding Advisor. He also received the
Freedoms Foundation at Valley Forge Leavey Award for Excellence in Private
Enterprise Education, the Wisconsin Business Education Outstanding
Postsecondary Award and Marketing Education Association¹s Professional Award
for his off-campus work. James also served as national president of the
Marketing Education Association.

This scholarship will benefit future marketing education teachers who seek
the Department of Public Instruction marketing education licensure. Both
undergraduate and graduate students will be eligible to apply for the
scholarship in Fall 2007.

Wisconsin Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) honored James for
his service, donating $1,000 toward the scholarship. In addition,
UW-Whitewater marketing education alumni honored James by donating $1,400 to
the scholarship.

James began his teaching career in 1971 as a high school marketing teacher
at Shawnee Mission Northwest High School in Kansas before entering a
doctorate program in 1975. After receiving his doctorate in 1978, he began
his career at UW-Whitewater.

James and Leita Feay Memorial Scholarship

To honor the love and support of her parents, University of
Wisconsin-Whitewater assistant professor of curriculum and instruction
Sheila Feay-Shaw has developed the James and Leita Feay Memorial Scholarship
for students in pursuit of music education.

³Nobody gets to the point of getting to a professional career without having
the support of other people,² said Feay-Shaw. ³For some students, that
doesn¹t include financial support from their families. It¹s intended to help
put that support out there for young professionals.²

Feay-Shaw and her husband Steven Shaw will give a $500 scholarship annually
to the UW-Whitewater music department¹s nominee for the Wisconsin Music
Educators Association (WMEA) Gaarder Award. The Gaarder Award recognizes a
Wisconsin undergraduate music major with exceptional leadership, musical
excellence and service to the campus and community.

The first scholarship will be presented to the WMEA Gaarder Award
UW-Whitewater nominee in May 2007.

Feay-Shaw¹s parents, James and Leita Feay, supported Feay-Shaw in all of her
musical endeavors. They provided music, dance, theater and visual arts
lessons, and attended countless concerts, recitals, performances and
festivals. Leita was a registered nurse, played trombone and was the drum
major for the Madison High School marching band in Madison, SD from 1947 to
1950. James was a United Methodist Minister on the Menominee Indian
Reservation in Northern Wisconsin for 30 years and enjoyed playing the scrub
boards along with family sing-a-longs.
