Midwestern Governors to Gather for Historic Energy Summit

Will Sign Agreements to Achieve Energy Security and

Reduce Pollution that Causes Global Warming

Governor Jim Doyle, chair of the Midwestern Governors Association (MGA), will host the Midwestern Governors Association Energy Security and Climate Change Summit on November 14-15, 2007 in Milwaukee.  At the Summit, Governors from across the Midwest and the Premier of Manitoba will sign historic agreements to strengthen America’s energy security by increasing production and use of renewable energy, promoting energy efficiency, and reducing greenhouse gases.

The summit will be co-hosted by Minnesota Governor Tim Pawlenty, immediate past chair of the MGA and current chair of the National Governors Association.

Governor Doyle and Governor Pawlenty will be joined in Milwaukee by Governor M. Michael Rounds of South Dakota, Governor Rod Blagojevich of Illinois (tentative), Governor Chester J. Culver of Iowa, Premier Gary Doer of Manitoba and Governor Jennifer Granholm of Michigan.

The Midwestern governors will take actions that build on other regional efforts across the country.  In 2003, California, Oregon, and Washington created the West Coast Global Warming Initiative; in 2006, Arizona and New Mexico launched the Southwest Climate Change Initiative; and in February of 2007, Arizona, California, New Mexico, Oregon and Washington launched the Western Regional Climate Action Initiative.
