Johnson Controls GRI Matrix and Annual Business and Sustainability Report Provide Comprehensive Account of Sustainable Business Practices

MILWAUKEE, April 13 /PRNewswire/ — Johnson Controls, a Fortune 100 company that creates smart environments for vehicles, homes and workplaces, recently launched two reports that detail its business and sustainability performance. A comprehensive online matrix allows readers to quickly track the company’s financial, environmental and social performance against the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) 2002 Sustainability Reporting Guidelines.

The GRI matrix provides stakeholders with the greatest level of transparency about the company’s performance during the 2006 fiscal year, and demonstrates its ongoing commitment to sustainability. It defines each indicator as complete, partially addressed or not applicable/not addressed, assisting readers in determining the level of GRI application.

“Johnson Controls defines success more broadly than just by financial results,” said Charles Harvey, vice president of Diversity and Public Affairs for Johnson Controls. “We also define it by our environmental and social performance, and we hope the updated GRI matrix will help demonstrate our commitment to that ‘triple bottom line.'”

Earlier this year, the company released its summary 2006 Business Review and Sustainability report. The sustainability section, comprising half of the report, describes how Johnson Controls creates smart environments within its own facilities and helps customers to do the same to fulfill their respective sustainability objectives, from energy efficiency to automated HVAC and lighting systems. The report also highlights several Johnson Controls innovations designed to improve energy efficiency and produce sustainable solutions. For instance, in 2006 the company expanded its hybrid vehicle battery research and received the industry’s first order for a lithium-ion hybrid-vehicle battery.

Additionally, the report emphasizes the importance of employee and community development. In 2006, Johnson Controls launched Blue Sky Involve, its first global employee involvement program focused on leader development and environmental stewardship. Through the program, employees have helped to secure 137 grants to employee-selected charities in 33 countries. Furthermore, nearly 5,000 employees contributed approximately 50,000 community volunteer hours globally in 2006.

The 2006 summary report, which is available in Chinese, English, French, German, Japanese and Spanish, and the GRI matrix can be found online at http://www.johnsoncontrols.com/. Hard copies of the report can also be requested via the website.
