Governor Doyle Announces $87,500 Brownfields Grant to City of Edgerton

Project spurs downtown redevelopment

MADISON –Governor Jim Doyle announced today that the City of Edgerton, Rock County, will receive a Blight Elimination and Brownfield Redevelopment (BEBR) grant of $87,500 from the Department of Commerce (Commerce) for environmental cleanup related to a downtown redevelopment.

“Cleaning up brownfields restores vacant or underused land to productivity and renews community pride,” Governor Doyle said. “I’m pleased that we could help the City of Edgerton accomplish a major downtown redevelopment project.”

The city will use Commerce funds for the environmental cleanup of a two-acre downtown parcel currently in use as municipally-owned parking lot.  The site will be developed with a three-story mixed-use building offering retail and office space, 24 residential units, and both underground and at-grade parking.  Total project cost is $6.3 million.

Commerce’s BEBR Program provides grant funds to municipalities, local development corporations, and the private sector to support assessment, remediation and return of contaminated lands to productive use.  Brownfields are abandoned, idle, or underused industrial or commercial properties where redevelopment is hindered by real or perceived contamination.  For more information, contact Jason Scott, Commerce, at 608/261-7714.
