DMV registration and titling system processes 17,300 products daily

In December of 2004, the DMV replaced its aging registration and titling
computer system, in place since the 1970’s.  As of
March 3, 2007, the new
system has issued over 14 million products, an average of more than 521,000
per month or 17,300 per day.

“The new system is far more flexible, allowing DMV employees to work more
productively,” notes DMV administrator Lynne Judd.  “It also allows for more
Web-based services, so more registration and titling business can be handled
online, either directly from a customer’s home or indirectly through a
business partner such as an auto dealer or convenience store.”  In addition,
the new system eliminates some manual processes by transferring data such as
parking citations from outside agencies directly to DMV.

In 2006 DMV produced 8.78 products per hour of staff time.  This number is
up from 8.24 products per hour, the average for the five previous years,
reflecting a seven percent increase.  In 1991, when DMV began the
development and implementation of completely new processing systems, it
could handle just 5.45 products per hour of staff time.  “Overall we’re
pleased with the increase we’re seeing in productivity,” said Judd.  “We’ll
continue to identify additional ways to use the system to achieve even
greater efficiencies and self-service convenience options for customers.”
