MADISON – With the April 17 tax deadline approaching, the Wisconsin Department of Revenue and the United States Postal Service have some last minute reminders for the nearly one half million last minute filers. Of the 2.2 million that have already filed their taxes, 64% have e-filed. With post offices across the state keeping to normal business hours on tax day, department officials cite this as another reason to e-file.
“Not many post offices stay open until midnight on tax day anymore,” stated Secretary of Revenue Michael L. Morgan. “E-filing can be done from the privacy of your own home at any time of the day or night.” To e-file for free, go to www.wisconsin.gov and click on FreeFile.
If you do decide to mail in your return, Terri Bouffiou, spokesperson for the United States Postal Service reminds you to check the final collection time which is posted on every mail collection box. “If you drop your tax return after the last pick up time you might not get the April 17 postmark.” To find out the hours for any post office, call 1-800 ASK-USPS or go to www.usps.com
