UW Oshkosh: Grants awarded to UW-Oshkosh up dramatically

OSHKOSH – About $16 million in grants of $5,000 or more were awarded by government agencies, foundations and others to the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh between July 1, 2004 and June 30, 2005.

That’s more than a 10-percent increase over the $14.5 million awarded the year before.

The total does not include 147 grants funded by the university’s Faculty Development Program.

The numbers are part of the just-released 2004-2005 annual report from the university’s Office of Grants and Faculty Development. The increase continues a trend that began at UW-Oshkosh in 2000. Between 2000 and 2004, grants increased from $3.7 to $11.7 million, or 216 percent.

“Research grants and other project support make a difference in the classroom and beyond the campus,” said Provost Lane Earns, noting that research and community service grants provide students with invaluable hands-on experience in their fields.

“Our faculty and staff spend much of their out-of-class time on research projects, many of them involving students, that enhance educational opportunities for children, protect our natural resources, preserve history, support businesses, and improve nursing care,” he said.

The entire report can be read at http://www.uwosh.edu/grants/documents/PDF/annual%20report6.pdf.

In a message included in the report, Earns refers to $11.6 million in extramural grants awarded to faculty and staff, but that number does not include a variety of nonacademic projects that are not reported to the UW System.

All of the grants are counted in the section on “Extramural Grants” on page 3 of the report.
