EAU CLAIRE — Tutoring fellow students led a University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire graduate to a teaching career. Now Michael Knetter, dean of the School of Business and professor of finance, investment and banking at UW-Madison, has established a new fund providing stipends for tutors in the UW-Eau Claire department of economics.
“I want to support the economics department that put my career on course and because I believe it is important to support student engagement in the learning process,” said Knetter, who graduated in 1983 with a dual major in economics and math. “My own experience as a tutor for the economics department convinced me to pursue a career in academics.”
The fund will provide stipends to four student tutors in economics. The gift is recognized as a contribution to Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence, the UW-Eau Claire Foundation’s ongoing comprehensive campaign to benefit UW-Eau Claire’s people and programs.
The Michael Knetter Tutoring Award is one of three new funds that have been established for the UW-Eau Claire’s economics department since the Fulfilling the Promise of Excellence campaign began in 2002.
In addition to his financial commitment to the UW-Eau Claire economics department, Knetter has also participated in the department’s alumni mentor program and came to campus to speak to students in March.
“Our goal is for our students to have successful and rewarding lives both during their time at UW-Eau Claire and after,” said Ed Young, chair of the UW-Eau Claire’s economics department. “We are grateful to alumni, like Michael, who support the programs that help us to do this.”
