State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference Starts Wednesday in Milwaukee

CHICAGO (Oct. 27, 2006) — The biennial State of the Lakes Ecosystem Conference (SOLEC) provides a science-based assessment of the state of the Great Lakes basin.

  What:  SOLEC was established by the governments of the U.S. and Canada in
1992 to provide coordinated and consistent reporting on the state of the
health of the Great Lakes basin ecosystem. The suite of indicators
developed by SOLEC participants provides information on basin-wide status
and trends. This year’s conference focuses on chemical integrity.

Where: Conference takes place at the Hyatt Regency, 333 W. Kilbourn Ave.,
Milwaukee, Wis.

When: Nov. 1-3, sessions run from 9 a.m. to approximately 5 p.m. except
Friday when the conference ends at noon. See a full agenda at

Who: Great Lakes decision-makers from federal, state and tribal
governments, non-governmental organizations, academia, industry and
recreational groups, as well as sport and commercial fishers, and health
professionals. Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett will open the conference at
9 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 1. U.S. EPA Deputy Administrator Marcus Peacock
and Environment Canada Ontario Regional Director General Pradeep Khare
will speak at 11 a.m.
