New Survey From Glade(R) Spotlights the Holiday Home and Scents of the Season

RACINE, Wis., Nov. 14 /PRNewswire/ — You’re all dressed up and ready to go. Party dress. Check. Party shoes. Check. Box of candy for the hostess. Think again. According to the Glade(R) Holiday Home Survey* conducted in honor of Glade’s(R) 50th Anniversary, chances are, that box of candy will make the holiday rounds. The survey showed that nearly 40 percent of women would prefer to receive a candle as a hostess gift over cookies (24 percent), candy (16 percent) and holiday hand towels (12 percent).

The results are not surprising given the Survey found that scented holiday candles are the most popular decor item women choose to get the home ready for guests during the holiday season. Scented candles (32 percent) edged out twinkle lights (30 percent) and Poinsettia plants (20 percent). Mistletoe seems to be a thing of the past with only 3 percent of women wanting to use the traditional token to set the mood.

According to the fragrance experts at Glade(R), the fact that scent and candles are such an important element of holiday decor is because smell is the sense most closely link to emotion, sparking memories of places and experience for people.

“As a family company, we focus on developing scents that help bring people together and enhance experience — like creating scents that lend themselves to a specific time of year, such as the holiday season,” explains Kelly Semrau, SC Johnson Vice President of Global Public Affairs and Communication. “Glade(R) uses state-of-the-art consumer research tools to help identify the cultural trends and attitudes, and we bring that to life through our product line,” said Semrau.

Throughout its fifty year history, Glade(R) has worked to develop Glade(R) home fragrances that fit consumer preferences. As the Holiday Home decorating survey indicated, today’s holiday favorites are sweet, fruit inspired fragrances, with pine trees and baked goods coming in at a close second. Glade(R) fragrances like Apple Cinnamon, Glistening Snow(R) appeal to this current craving and help create a warm, welcoming ambience. The new Cranberry Delight(R) & Everlasting Pine(R) 2 in 1 candle adds a fun twist to perennial pine favorites.

What Else is Hot for the Holiday Home?

So since nobody seems to miss the mistletoe, what do today’s hostesses prefer to use to set the stage for a festive holiday party? According to the Survey, it’s a combination of festive music (79 percent) and candles (66 percent) and the house is ready for holiday action!

The Deflating Truth about Decor

Bigger isn’t always better … and that goes for outdoor holiday decorations. Almost half of the Survey respondents indicated that they’d like to pull the plug on those giant inflatable reindeer, snowman and Santas (and any other holiday inflatable for that matter) and 40 percent of the respondents said they aren’t so sweet on those larger than life candy canes, either.

As it turns out, over-the-top decorating is overrated. More than half of respondents said that putting decorations away is the chore they dread most when it comes to holiday decorating. With 27 percent saying they don’t like it when their neighbors leave their decorations up until Valentine’s Day; you’ve got a little slack with packing up the outdoor decor. But, if you stick to the small stuff, it will make holiday home decorating effortless and help score points with everyone on the block.

The Biggest Holiday Home Turn-Off

While your guests might not make a big stink about bad directions (15 percent) or bad food (23 percent), according to the Survey, a stinky home (42 percent) is the biggest turn-off when visiting someone’s home for the holidays. So freshen the air, light some scented candles and enjoy the simple pleasures of the season!

Glade(R) Fragrance Experts Make “Scents” Of It All

In addition to holiday favorites like pine, fruit and baking inspired scents, another scent trend that fits well within the holiday season is beverage-inspired fragrances like Hazelnut Cappuccino(TM) & Espresso Bean(TM) and French Vanilla.

From its start 50 years ago with two innovative products, the Glade(R) collection has grown to include 50 fragrances in an ever-evolving range of product forms from scented oils, to candles, to carpet products to gels. New for the holidays are Scented Oil Candles Trio wrapped as a festive package, and Glade(R) candles offered in festive holiday fragrances with easy-to-remove labels that are just perfect for a hostess gift.
