Marian College: 2006 Summer Institute on Board and Leader Development at Marian College June 15

Fond du Lac, Wis. — The 2006 Summer Institute on Board and Leader Development — “Collaboration and Community: Stimulating Zest, Meaning, and Purpose in Your Organization” — will take place at Marian College’s Stayer Center for Technology & Executive Learning Thursday, June 15 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The conference, the second held at Marian College, includes a variety of workshops and opportunities for community leaders. The goal of the conference is to develop the skills of not-for-profit boards of directors and organization leaders. Individual workshops will address understanding the role of a board member, developing skills needed to function more effectively as a board member, leadership skills, recruitment and retention of board members, improving the quality of organizational governance, and improving the quality and level of service in not-for-profit organizations.

Don Frick, leadership consultant, lecturer, and former associate of the Greenleaf Center in Indianapolis, will provide the keynote address: “Servant-Leader Power in the Boardroom.” Frick, an award-winning author, recently completed the biography Robert K. Greenleaf: A Life of Servant Leadership. He will be available for book signing and follow-up discussion.

“Clients and customers of service organizations have come to expect leaders and boards to be more effective than ever,” says Jeffrey Reed, Ph.D., PMP, co-executive director of the Marian College Center for Spirituality & Leadership. “The 2006 Summer Institute on Board and Leader Development offers an opportunity to help improve our community by helping not-for-profit organizations and leaders to improve their skills and knowledge.”

“Our communities are increasingly dependent on not-for-profit organizations for services ranging from athletics and fitness to social services and youth programs,” says Marty Ison-Kocos, marketing and communications director for the Fond du Lac Area YMCA. “Partnering in this effort expands the capacity to provide non-financial resources to our nonprofit organizations.”

Summer Institute on Board and Leader Development participants will:

• Increase their understanding of the role of a board member.

• Develop skills needed to function more effectively as a board member.

• Develop leadership skills.

• Aid in recruitment and retention of board members.

• Improve quality of organization governance.

• Learn ways to value the contributions of everyone in the organization.

The program is sponsored by the Fond du Lac Area Human Resources Association, Fond du Lac Area United Way, and the Marian College Center for Spirituality & Leadership. Grants of support have been received from the Fond du Lac Area Foundation, and the Sophia Foundation. The summer institute planning team has included representatives from Fond du Lac Area Boys & Girls Club, Fond du Lac Center for Spirituality & Healing, Fond du Lac Area YMCA, Families Aware of Violent Relationships, and Young Professionals of Fond du Lac.

The Fond du Lac Area Human Resources Association is a division of the Fond du Lac Area Association of Commerce and an affiliate of the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM).
