Harley workers overwhelmingly approve contract concessions

MILWAUKEE – United Steelworkers union workers have approved contract concessions by a 943-to-536 vote that Harley-Davidson demanded in order to go forward with a $120 million Milwaukee plant expansion.

Members of Local 2209 announced the vote about 7:30 p.m. About 1,600 union members were eligible to vote today.

The contract revision includes lower wages for workers who are hired after January 1 and a decrease in health insurance, pensions and cost-of-living adjustments for all workers.

Harley has about 4,500 workers in the Milwaukee area.

The union workers overwhelmingly rejected a similar proposal last month, although it had a larger gap between the wage levels for existing workers and new hires.
