Madison – Department of Revenue (DOR) Secretary Michael L. Morgan and
Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Roberta Gassman have
again partnered up to inform Wisconsin’s low-income wage earners of the
Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC) and the Homestead Credit (HC). Combined,
these credits can provide up to $7,452 of additional income for eligible
Wisconsin taxpayers.

“Together with the Department of Workforce Development, we are creating a
greater awareness among Wisconsin’s low-income working taxpayers who are
possibly eligible to receive these tax credits,” said Secretary Morgan.
“This is money that should be going to residents who need it.”

The DOR created an informational mailer piece and the DWD then distributed
it to nearly 345,000 residents who received Unemployment Insurance (UI) or
Wisconsin Works (W-2) over the last year. The mailer also included
information on where to find free tax preparation assistance, commonly
referred to as VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance).

To be eligible for the credits, a person must meet certain income levels in
2005 (less than $24,500 to claim the Homestead Credit and less than $37,263
to claim state and federal Earned Income Tax Credits) and be a legal
residents of Wisconsin all year.
