Department Of Commerce: Announces Grant For Truck Tractor Owners To Reduce Fuel Costs And Air Pollution

Contact: Tony Hozeny, Department of Commerce, 608/267-9661

MADISON- Common, contract, and private motor carriers in Wisconsin will soon be eligible for idling reduction units to reduce fuel costs and air pollution. The Department of Commerce is implementing a new grant program to reduce diesel truck idling through the use of idling reduction units.

“This new program is a win-win for both the trucking industry and the environment in the state,” says Secretary of Commerce Mary P. Burke. “The idling reduction units will save on fuel consumption costs and improve air quality at the same time.”

Idling reduction units provide an alternative source of power to heat, cool, or provide electricity to the cab and parts of the truck in lieu of operating the truck’s main drive engine.

Applicants will receive a reimbursement of 70 percent for the costs of idling reduction equipment and installation. Applicants must also agree to collect information on the performance and operation of the idling reduction unit for the department.

Applications are available online at http://commerce.wi.gov/dieselgrantprogram.

Applications will be accepted starting July 1, 2006.
