Wisconsin’s Own and Student Shorts Juried Competitions

 

 

STUDENT SHORTS COMPETITION

 

For student filmmakers at Wisconsin schools, colleges and universities.

Student Competition Jurors:  Amy Beste, Didier Leplae, Ian Rosenberg.

 

I. JURY AWARDS

 

The jury awarded prizes to three films:

 

1) Best Animated Short: ONE MINUTE INTERVIEW

Animated Short | USA | 2004 | 1 min | Mini DV

Director:  Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson

 

Filmmaker Kyja Kristjansson-Nelson is a graduate student and teaching assistant at UW-Milwaukee, working toward her M.F.A. in Film.

 

2) Best Experimental Short: EXISTENTIAL SEARCH OF A NEEDLE

Experimental Short | USA | 2004 | 3 min | Color and B/W | Mini DV

Director:  Fevzi Balli

 

Filmmaker Fevzi Balli is a student at UW-Madison and will begin his graduate studies in film in fall 2005.

 

3) Best Documentary Short: BLAZE ORANGE 

Documentary Short | USA | 2004 | 16 min | Color | DV Cam

Director:  Kevin Kilduff

 

Filmmaker Kevin Kilduff is a senior at UW-Madison, majoring in Communication Arts and Economics.

 

 

II.  KODAK FILM STOCK GRANTS

 

Awarded to projects originating on film for the best achievement in use of motion picture film, $500 each. 

 

THE FACE PROJECT, Director: Andy Schlachtenhaufen, a junior majoring in Communication Arts and East Asian Studies at UW-Madison.

 

FIELD WORK, Director: Timothy Zwettler, who recently received his BFA in film from UW-Milwaukee.

 

LAKE EFFECT, Director:  Ryan Bigelow, a graduate of the UW-Milwaukee film program.



 

WISCONSIN’S OWN COMPETITION

Madison filmmaker and creative director John Besmer shot Lifelike in Mt. Horeb.

Director:  Katherine Leggett

Stanford, Calif., filmmaker and writer Katherine Leggett is a UW-Madison alum.

 

Best Experimental: MY MOST IMPORTANT SELF-PORTRAIT

Director:  James Barany

Waukesha filmmaker James Barany teaches at the Milwaukee Institute of Arts & Design.

 

Best Documentary Feature: THE REAL DIRT ON FARMER JOHN

Director:  Taggart Siegel 

Both filmmaker Taggart Siegel and Farmer John Peterson are Beloit College alumni.

 

Best Feature: NBT: Never Been Thawed

Director:  Sean Anders

Writer, director and actor Sean Anders is a Madison native.

Director Scott Foley for TO SAY GOODBYE

 

Documentary Short | USA | 2004 | 19 min | B/W | 16mm

Filmmaker Scott Foley received his MFA in film from UW-Milwaukee, where he currently teaches.

 

III.  KODAK OPPORTUNITY AWARD FILM STOCK GRANT

 

To recognize achievement in a project that did not originate on film, and to provide an opportunity for the filmmaker to work on film in a future project ($1,500).

 

Director John Mossman for SPACEMAN DAN’S 243rd FLIGHT

Director:  John Mossman

 

Filmmaker John Mossman is a UW-Madison alum and shot Spaceman Dan in the Baraboo and Mt. Horeb region.
