Wis.: An Economy in Transition: Part II

To track the health of Wisconsin’s economy, WisPolitics.com and WisBusiness.com, with the sponsorship help of the Wisconsin REALTORS Association, are producing a series of Web cast interviews leading up to the 2006 elections.

The second round of interviews, which took place Dec. 1 in Madison, provides sector reports on three key parts of the Wisconsin economy — technology, retail and banking. Representing those sectors, respectively, were Tom Still of the Wisconsin Technology Council, Chris Tackett of the Wisconsin Merchants Federation and Kurt Bauer of the Wisconsin Bankers Association.

Bauer is the president of the Wisconsin Bankers Association, and he says bankers report that the economy appears to be doing well. He and his group have concerns about property taxes.

Tackett is the president of the Wisconsin Merchants Federation, and he says preliminary figures show a strong holiday shopping season. He and his group have concerns about sales taxes.

And Still leads the Wisconsin Technology Council. He says it’s been a good year for his emerging industry. He has concerns about the state’s image.
