UW Oshkosh: Entrepreneurship is focus of UW-Oshkosh symposium

OSHKOSH – A talk by the founder of a local company and panel discussions involving entrepreneurs will be part of a Celebration of Entrepreneurship and Small Business Success Oct. 31-Nov. 2 at the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh.

The UW-Oshkosh College of Business, the first in Wisconsin to offer an entrepreneurship emphasis, will conclude its fourth annual symposium by co-sponsoring Corporate Report’s Small Business Success awards.

All events are free and open to the public in the Reeve Memorial Union ballroom, 748 Algoma Blvd.

Here are the events:
· At 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 31, UW-Oshkosh alum Charlie Goff, owner of Certronix and former Appleton alderman, will discuss small business ownership and involvement in local government.

· At 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 1, a panel including entrepreneurs who graduated in each decade since the college’s founding in 1965, will reflect on their years as business students and the founding of their organizations. They also will provide advice to small business owners, students and others at the free symposium.

The panel includes Dave Elbing, class of 1972, owner/president of Laser Specialities; Jeanne Tondryk, 1976, owner of a staffing and event planning business in Chicago; Curtis Riskey, 1990, owner, Basic Books; and Ross McDowell, 2004, owner, Movin’ Shoes. The moderator will be UW-Oshkosh management and entrepreneurship professor Burk Tower.

· At 6 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 2, Corporate Report Wisconsin, Associated Bank and the college will host the first annual Small Business Success awards. The companies being honored include McFarland State Bank; Strohm Ballweg, an accounting firm in Madison; 1Prospect.com of Rhinelander; Commercial Communications Inc. of Hartland; Tri City Glass and Door of Appleton; Grant Regional Health Center of Lancaster; Val-Fab Inc. of Neenah; AutoComm Inc. of Appleton and Mid Valley Industries Inc. of Kaukauna.

The symposium is sponsored partially by the UW-Oshkosh Small Business Development Center, UW-Extension and the U.S. Small Business Administration.
