UW Madison School of Business: UW-Madison Accounting Professor Among Most Influential in Finance

News Release

An accounting professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison School of Business has been named one of the nation’s 100 most influential people in finance.

In its June issue, Treasury and Risk Management Magazine included Ernst & Young Professor of Accounting Larry Rittenberg on a list heavy with government and industry leaders including President George W. Bush; New York State Attorney General Eliot Spitzer; Lawrence Ellison, CEO of Oracle Corp.; and Indra Nooyi, president and CFO of PepsiCo Inc.

Only eight academics made the list. Rittenberg was included because of his work as chairman of the Committee of Sponsoring Organizations of the Treadway Commission (COSO) and its efforts to provide guidance for small and midsize companies on internal control compliance. COSO is sponsored by the five major professional accounting associations in the United States.

On the UW-Madison faculty since 1976, Rittenberg teaches in the area of audit and assurance, including topics on risk management and corporate governance. His current research deals with the effectiveness of audit committees, corporate governance and assurance services.

In July, he will receive The Institute of Internal Auditors’ 2005 Bradford Cadmus Memorial Award, its highest award, in recognition of his contributions to the internal auditing profession.
