June 7, 2005 – MADISON, Wis. – Pacific Cycle is proud to donate $6,000 to the Matthew James Wittig Cycling Scholarship at the University of Wisconsin, a fund created in memory of a fallen University of Wisconsin student cyclist.

Wittig, a member of the IS Corp and University of Wisconsin Cycling Teams, died following a crash in a Wisconsin Cup criterium in late May 2005.

“As a member of the Madison, Wisconsin business community and a major player in the area’s cycling community, we felt it only appropriate to contribute to such a noble cause,” said Chris Hornung, Founder and CEO of Pacific Cycle.

Pacific Cycle’s $6,000 donation quickly brought scholarship organizers to their goal of $10,500, an amount that would ensure the permanence of the fund.

“The community’s support of the Matthew James Wittig Cycling Scholarship has been quite overwhelming. Support from industry-leaders like Pacific Cycle, as well as individuals across the country, has made a permanent memorial to Matthew Wittig a reality,” said Jeff Rose, the scholarship’s organizer.

This annual scholarship will be awarded to an undergraduate University of Wisconsin Student, male or female, who actively participates in the UW Cycling Club. This scholarship will function as an endowment such that after the initial installment, the scholarship will sustain itself for the lifetime of the University of Wisconsin. Beginning this coming fall, a UW Cyclist will receive the Matthew James Wittig Cycling Scholarship every year for the lifetime of the University of Wisconsin. Recipients will be selected by a committee of UW Cycling Club Officers, select UW Cycling Alumni, the Wittig family, and the UW Foundation staff.

Those wanting to donate to the scholarship can mail contributions to:
