Due to a change in plant lighting that dropped the power used for lighting by 114,053 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year — about 41% — the Bradley Company of Milwaukee WI has been presented with the Orion Environmental Stewardship Award. The amount Bradley spends for power for lighting fell by a corresponding amount. The reduction was produced by a change from high-intensity discharge (HID) a state-of-the-art Orion T8 fluorescent system.

“We appreciate receiving the award, said Bradley manufacturing engineer Ron Walter. “We are a very environmentally-conscious company and make a point of doing things right”

So how is this power reduction environmental stewardship? Power saved does not have to be generated at all; and, according to US government formulas, Bradley’s 114,053 kWh reduction will meant that 111 tons of carbon dioxide, 30 tons of carbon, one-half ton of sulfur dioxide and two-tenths tons of nitrogen oxides — all pollutant by-products of power generation — will not go into the atmosphere every year.

Stated another way, the reduction is the air-scrubbing equivalent of a 21-acre forest or removing 16 cars permanently from the road. It is the conservation equivalent of saving 9,415 gallons of gasoline per year.

The project involved replacing 136 400-watt and 1000-watt metal halide lamps with 181 224-watt T8 Illuminator ® fluorescent fixtures from Orion Energy Services of Plymouth WI. The change took 114,053 kWh off Bradley’s existing 271,502 kWh lighting power load, bringing it down to 157,4459.

Walter said the company agreed to the lighting retrofit only after a side-by -side test was conducted at their facility. “We had one of each type of fixture on a meter and compared the two.” He said. “We’ve been very satisfied with the new lighting. The employees like it, too.”

“If all companies would do with their lighting what Bradley did, our analysis shows that it would save the equivalent of at least 100 power plants the size of the Kewanee, WI nuclear plant,” said Neal Verfuerth, Orion president.

“Since Hurricane Katrina, everyone has been talking of ways to either save or produce more power, but Orion’s been preaching energy efficiency from day one. The neat thing about Bradley’s project was that they actually got better light than they had before and saved money into the bargain. They did not have to scrimp or ‘do without’ — and that’s the way we think things ought to work. We congratulate Bradley on their accomplishment.”
