Independent Living, Inc. has received a Gold Award and a $2,000 grant from the Meals on Wheels Association of America. The award is given to programs that make the biggest impact through publicity, community involvement and fundraising during the annual national March for Meals campaign. In partnership with the University of Wisconsin Marching Band, WISC TV-3 and Midwest Family Broadcasting, Independent Living dedicated the month of March to a campaign designed to recruit volunteers, raise awareness and secure subsidy funding to ensure that no older adult goes to bed hungry.

The Evening Meals on Wheels program earned professional certification from the Meals on Wheels Association of America in 2004, joining a prestigious group of programs nationwide dedicated to providing quality senior nutrition services at the highest levels of organizational accountability. Independent Living has been part of the national Meals on Wheels program since 1989.

In 2004, more than 44,000 nutritious, evening meals were prepared in the Independent Living kitchens and delivered to older and disabled adults in Madison, Monona, Middleton, Sun Prairie, Verona, Fitchburg, Cottage Grove and Deerfield. Hundreds of Independent Living volunteers deliver nightly meals and more than 900 free holiday meals at Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter.
