Madison, WI – Approximately 1500 wildlife professionals and college students converged in Madison for The Wildlife Society 12th Annual Conference from September 25-29. Held at the Monona Terrace® Community and Convention Center, the conference gave attendees the opportunity to discuss the latest in wildlife science, natural resources management, wildlife education, and conservation policy.

“We’re excited to welcome The Wildlife Society Annual Conference to Madison,” said Deb Archer, GMCVB President & CEO. “This organization is one of the many high profile environmental and natural resources groups who have selected Madison as their meeting place. Our reputation as one of the greenest cities in America is helping us attract the nation’s top conservation groups.”
Additional environmental and natural resources groups who have selected Madison as their meeting site include the Outdoor Writers Association of America, the Association of State Flood Plain Managers and coming this fall, the National Association of State Foresters, the National Land Trust Alliance and the National Association of Lake Management Society will host meetings in Madison.

The direct spending of this week’s Wildlife Society Conference is $432,900.

“Madison is considered the birthplace of the wildlife profession as a result of the work of pioneering wildlife ecologist Aldo Leopold who was based in Madison from 1924 until his death in 1948,” stated Sandra Staples-Bortner, Program Director for the Wildlife Society. “We are honored to host our meeting in a location that encourages us to follow in Leopold’s footsteps.”
