Madison, WI-As one of the greenest cities in the United States, Madison’s landscapes and gorgeous environment attract over 2.5 million visitors annually. The Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau (GMCVB) introduces the Official Green Guide for Visitors. The first of its kind, the Green Guide encourages visitors to respectfully enjoy the area’s rural landscapes, beautiful streams and fantastic parks.
Sustain Dane, a non-profit organization committed to making Dane County more sustainable, and Madison Gas and Electric collaborated with the GMCVB to create the Green Guide. The Green Guide offers tips on everything from how to rent a hybrid to where to enjoy Madison’s varied ecosystems.
“Being a Green visitor is easy; all it takes is the ability to make informed decisions,” stated Deb Archer, president and CEO of the Greater Madison Convention & Visitors Bureau. “With the Green Guide’s help, visitors will realize how simple it can be to make a difference. Choices such as bringing your own mug to the coffee shop or your own cloth bag to the store help conserve resources. “
Here are some Green Guide tips to put into practice wherever one’s travels take them:
· Request environmentally-friendly rooms: Many hotels now offer special features such as low-flow showers and toilets, energy-efficient lights, and recycling bins in the rooms.
· Put a cork in it: Buy wines with real “corks.” Cork is a sustainable resource. In addition, ancient cork forests provide savanna habitat for at least 42 bird and 60 plant species.
· Take a load off: If you must travel by car in the city you visit, keep your luggage at your place of lodging to improve gas mileage.
