MADISON—Thirty-two Wisconsin companies – from small manufacturers to a Fortune 500 giant – have been nominated for the prestigious Business Friend of the Environment Awards honoring leadership in environmental protection.

The 2004 Business Friend of the Environment Awards are presented by the Wisconsin Environmental Working Group® (WEWG®), an affiliate of Wisconsin Manufacturers & Commerce.

Nine awards, based on company size, will be presented to businesses for their commitment and improvements in the areas of pollution prevention, innovative technology, and environmental stewardship.

Winners will be honored during the 15th Annual Environmental Policy and Awards Conference on May 12, at the Marriott Hotel in Waukesha.

“Wisconsin businesses go beyond government mandates to make significant investments in their plants and processes to pioneer effective environmental programs,” said Jeff Schoepke, director of the Wisconsin Environmental Working Group®. “These companies are environmental stewards that are committed to cutting waste and making their operations more environmentally sound.”

An independent panel of judges including industry representatives, the Department of Natural Resources, and the University of Wisconsin-Extension select the Business Friend of the Environment winners.

The 15th Annual Environmental Policy and Awards Conference will feature panel discussions on air quality and permitting issues, information on the recently-passed Job Creation Act, and an update on DNR permit streamlining efforts.

DNR Secretary Scott Hassett will provide the luncheon keynote and will give his perspective on air, water, and waste issues facing Wisconsin. Senator Mary Panzer (R-West Bend) will offer highlights of this Legislative session, including the passage of environmental audit legislation, as well as her thoughts on future priorities.
