(Mequon, WI – December 1, 2004) Great Lakes Media Technology, Wisconsin’s only manufacturer of CD and DVD media, recently produced their annual Holiday CD. Past versions of the CD, which are sent to the company’s client list, contained a selection of licensed audio recordings with a holiday theme. This year’s project was quite different. Produced as a CD-ROM, the disc not only contains a selection of audio recordings, but also a variety of holiday recipes that can be viewed and printed out by playing the disc in any computer.

For the music portion of the disc, Great Lakes Media Technology sought a traditional sound, and found it in local musicians Beth Grbich and Christine Dittman. Beth and Christine are long time hammered dulcimer players, an instrument that dates back to Biblical times, is related to the psaltry, and also spawned the more common Appalachian dulcimer within the last 200 years. The sound of the instrument reflects the percussive and tonal qualities of the method by which it is played: by using small mallets to strike a series of tuned strings. The result is similar to the combined sound of a piano and harp.

After the songs were selected, Beth and Christine attended a recording session at Burst Studios in Wauwatosa, WI to complete the project. Burst Studios is part of the Burst Collective, an organization that houses a nationally known recording studio, record label, and audio library. Kyle White, an engineer whose background in recording various jazz legends while working in Chicago, was a perfect fit to understand and capture the nuances of the hammered dulcimer. Daniel Holter, president of Burst Collective, whose clients have included the likes of BMW, Midwest Express, and Hyundai, was interested in helping Great Lakes Media Technology with this project to add to the audio variety the organization has always explored.

After the recording project was finished, Great Lakes Media Technology completed the master, along with the audio and authored recipe interface, manufactured the discs, developed the packaging, and is currently in the process of sending out a copy of the finished product to each of their customers, as a way of thanking them for their business over the past year.
