To further reduce the size of the state’s vehicle fleet,
more than 140 automobiles will be auctioned off beginning at 10:00 a.m. on
Saturday, September 25, 2004 at the UW Agricultural Research Station in
Arlington. The third public auction this year, the sale is another step in
accomplishing Governor Jim Doyle’s directive to return the fleet to its 1994
level by eliminating 1,000 vehicles.

“Years of rampant overspending in the 1990s and a lack of
oversight produced a vehicle fleet far larger than what was actually
needed,” Governor Doyle said. “Reducing the size of the state fleet makes
sure tax dollars are used wisely and that fiscal responsibility is at the
forefront of fleet operations.”

In addition to public auctions, Governor Doyle placed a
freeze on new vehicle purchases and is requiring agencies participate in the
state’s FleetAnywhere database. In the process of being fully implemented,
FleetAnywhere will improve management and record keeping throughout the
fleet.

A public inspection of the vehicles will be held at the
auction site in Arlington Friday, September 24, 2004 from 1:00 p.m. to 6:00
p.m., and from 8:00 a.m. until the end of the auction on Saturday. All
vehicles at the auction will be sold in their current condition.

More information about Saturday’s auction, including an
itemized vehicle list, as well as information about future auctions is
