MILWAUKEE, Wis. – The law firm of Quarles & Brady LLP today announced that Katherine Maloney Perhach, an associate with the Firm, will receive the Pro Bono Award for a Private, Government or Corporate Practitioner during the 2006 Public Service/Pro Bono Volunteer Lawyers Recognition Celebration on Wednesday, May 3.  The event is sponsored by the State Bar of Wisconsin, the Wisconsin Supreme Court and the Wisconsin Law Foundation.

“Katie is an outstanding attorney, and we are pleased that she actively provides pro bono services to those who otherwise may not be able to have legal representation,” said Patrick M. Ryan, chairman and managing partner of Quarles & Brady.  “It is wonderful that her efforts are being recognized with this award, and we congratulate Katie for all of her hard work.”

Perhach focuses her practice in the areas of real estate, eminent domain, construction, dealership and bankruptcy litigation matters.  In addition, she also represents several of the Firm’s pro bono clients, including those with guardianship, criminal, immigration and restraining order cases.

In one instance, Perhach represented a Senegalese woman in Immigration Court in Chicago on an asylum claim.  Because the woman conceived a child out of wedlock and with a non-Muslim man, she was threatened with a “customary” beating by her male relatives when she returned to Senegal.  With Perhach’s representation, the woman is now living in the United States raising her son.  In another situation, Perhach successfully represented a woman who sought to become the legal guardian for her sister’s two minor children after her sister died in a car accident.  The father of one of the children also went to prison for causing the mother’s death.

Perhach is also a volunteer with the restraining order clinic run by the Task Force on Family Violence.  In this role, she assists victims of domestic abuse and harassment to get restraining orders, and she represents the victims at their injunction hearings.

Perhach is a member of the State Bar of Wisconsin, the American Bar Association, the Milwaukee Bar Association and the Milwaukee Young Lawyer’s Association.  She earned her bachelor’s and law degrees from Marquette University.  She is a resident of Whitefish Bay.
