The Wisconsin Railroad Association welcomed over 100 industry stakeholders for its 9th
annual Freight Rail Day in Madison on Tuesday, October 20th.
WRA and attendees welcomed U.S. Congressman Jeff Denham (R-California), who
provided an insightful update on federal transportation issues, to start the day. Denham
currently serves on the House Transportation Committee and is a leader on rail issues
as Chair of the Subcommittee on Railroads, Pipelines and Hazardous Materials.
Following Denham was a presentation on the future of the freight transportation
industry.
Attendees also spent part of the day at the state capitol, where state Representative
John Spiros, Vice-Chair of the Assembly Transportation Committee, welcomed them
and kicked off a briefing and panel discussion on safety preparedness and training
resources. Moderated by Jeff Mayers from WisPolitics.com, the panel consisted of a
diverse group of industry experts, including Wisconsin Railroad Commissioner Jeff
Plale.
Railroad trespass was one focal point of the discussion, with panelists highlighting the
public safety issues associated with trespassing, and the need for state laws to be in
place to prevent this dangerous activity. Attendees also heard from emergency
response professionals about the protocol followed by railroads and first responders
when accidents occur involving hazardous materials. Following the discussion, a
number of attendees drew attention to the advocacy day by visiting with lawmakers and
staff.
“This annual event serves as a great opportunity for industry stakeholders to network
with peers, learn about emerging issues, and share industry developments. It is also a
great way for stakeholders to highlight the importance of the freight rail industry to
lawmakers and discuss pressing public policy issues,” said Rep. John Spiros.
WRA would like to thank event attendees, panelists, and lawmakers, including guest
speakers U.S. Congressman Jeff Denham and state Representative John Spiros, along
with Commissioner Plale, for making the day a success.
