Economic Scorecard poll: Voters broadly opposed to hike in gas tax

The new Wisconsin Economic Scorecard statewide poll shows widespread opposition to a 5-cent-per-gallon boost in the state gasoline tax

The poll, done in cooperation with WisBusiness.com, shows 71 percent of registered voters polled opposed that option.

But when it comes to covering a large projected shortfall in the state transportation fund, there is no clearly-preferred option:

*Tax/user fee increases are preferred by 31 percent;

*Introduction of toll roads gets 30 percent approval,

*And delaying major construction projects garners 31 percent of respondents.

However, the latter option provokes the least intense opposition.

In addition, the poll found about about 53 percent of Wisconsin voters would prefer the state prioritize assistance to established manufacturing, while 34 percent would like to see incentives go to new start-up technology firms.

The Wisconsin Economic Scorecard is a quarterly poll of Wisconsin residents conducted by the UWM Center for Urban Initiatives and Research, in cooperation with WisBusiness.com and Milwaukee Public Radio (WUWM 89.7).

The third quarter 2014 edition of the Wisconsin Economic Scorecard was a random digit dial landline/mobile telephone survey of 427 Wisconsin residents, conducted by the CUIR Survey Center at UW-Milwaukee from Sept. 22-27.

The sampling margin of error was plus or minus 4.7 percent for the entire sample and plus or minus 4.9 percent for the smaller registered voter group of respondents.
