MADISON – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) encourages those interested in entering the meat industry to attend one of three planned workshops. Preparing for a Career in the Meat Industry workshops will be held across Wisconsin in June.
Presenters for all three workshops will be: Livestock and Meat Specialist Jeff Swenson, DATCP; Dr. Jeff Sindelar, UW-Madison; and Dr. Kurt Vogel, UW-River Falls. Topics for the workshops include, but are not limited to: food safety, understanding meat quality, meat cookery, and resume development.
“This workshop is a unique opportunity to learn basic information on meat production and job skills from experts in the field,” said Swenson. “By attending this workshop, individuals will be prepared to compete competitively for positions and contribute to our state’s meat industry.”
Each workshop will be held from 8:45 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Dates and locations are:
* Tuesday, June 7, 2011: UW-Madison: Animal Science Building, 1675 Observatory Drive, Madison
* Thursday, June 9, 2011: UW-Extension: Eau Claire County, 227 First Street West, Altoona
* Friday, June 10, 2011: UW-Green Bay, 2420 Nicolet Drive, Green Bay
“The Wisconsin meat industry has a $12.3 billion economic impact on our state and provides 88,000 jobs,” explained Swenson. “There is currently an increased demand for artisan products produced locally creating many job opportunities in the meat industry.”

Cost of registration is being covered by a grant from the Wisconsin Agricultural Education & Workforce Development Council. The mission of the Council is to attract, develop, and retain the premium workforce required to Grow Wisconsin’s agricultural industry, food, and natural resource systems.
