MSOE: Students place in top 10 nationally

Three MSOE students finished among the top ten in business competition events held at the Future Business Leaders of America – Phi Beta Lambda (FBLA-PBL) national leadership conference. MSOE Rader School of Business freshmen Alex Rode (international business major) and Josh Gachnang (management information systems major) took fourth place in the business ethics competition. Junior software engineering major Anthony Pleshek finished in 10th place in the computer networking event.

In addition to their achievement at the state and national levels, Rode and Gachnang are members of the Blatz Café management team. The café is a student-led enterprise that provides hands-on management experience and serves as a business laboratory for Rader School of Business courses. Pleshek’s accomplishments reflect the commitment he has shown to building both his engineering skills and business acumen.

A total of 13 MSOE students qualified for nationals by taking first place in their events at the state level this past April. Eight students traveled to the national competition, which was held at the FBLA-PBL national leadership conference in Anaheim, Calif., June 20-23, 2009. It attracted 1,776 college students from 37 states. In addition to the eight MSOE students, Wisconsin’s representation included students from UW-Madison, UW-Whitewater and Ripon College.

Dr. Michael J. Payne accompanied the students to Anaheim. The eight students representing MSOE are members of MSOE’s Business Leaders Association (MBLA). The Rader School of Business and MBLA have been affiliated with FBLA-PBL since 2006. Membership in MBLA is open to all majors. Advisors include Payne, Professor Kristin Shebesta and Dr. Steven C. Bialek.
