MIT Club of Wisconsin: Technology Award Winners to Be Honored at March 11 Banquet

The MIT alumni/ae living in Wisconsin have chosen to recognize those making major contributions to Wisconsin’s economy through technological change, by honoring an individual and two companies at their 2004 MIT Club of Wisconsin Technology Awards.

This year’s honorees are:

+ Individual:
Dr. James Dumesic, of the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department at the University of Wisconsin in Madison, has developed technology to convert biomass to fuel- grade hydrogen. This technolgy is the basis for the creation of the start-up company Virent. Jim was recently recognized as one of 50 Tech Leaders for the year 2003, in the magazine SCIENTIFIC AMERICAN.

+ Small Company:
nPoint, based in Madison, is the innovative manufacturer of products that use nanopositioning for motion control. The technical basis for nPoint’s technology is the research of Professor Max Lagally of the Materials Science & Engineering and Physics Departments at the University of Wisconsin in Madison. Among his numerous awards, Max was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2000.

+ Large Company:
Quad Tech International (QTI), based in Sussex, is a pre-eminent designer and manufacturer of automated controls for printing. As the R&D Division of Quad/Graphics, QTI has helped Quad/Graphics become one of the world’s largest printers.

The Technological Achievement Awards banquet will be held on March 11th at the Rotunda in Waukesha. The event starts at 6 PM, and consists of:

6 PM: Cash Bar;
6:45 PM: Dinner;
7:30 PM: Awards Presentation; and
8:00 PM: Keynote Adress – John Preston

The address of the Rotunda is: 235 W. Broadway in downtown Waukesha. The choice of dinner entrees will be:
Sicilian Chicken with Pinenuts and Spinach; or
Roasted Portabella Mushroom.

Our keynoter, John Preston, has a BS in Physics from UW-Madison and is now a senior lecturer in the Sloan School at MIT. John has been intimately involved in the start-up of numerous companies. His topic will be ‘The Economic Importance of Innovation and Key Success Factors in Innovation.

The cost of the event is $55 for an individual, and $550 for a table for 10. Those people or organizations buying a table will be recognized as TABLE SPONSORS.
