Bayfield, Wis. — Island Gateway Gallery & Gathering will celebrate its grand opening with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 1 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 15, at 23 N. 2nd St. in downtown Bayfield.
The ceremony will be followed by an opening reception from 1 to 3 p.m. for “Here, Finally,” an exhibition by gallery founders and Bayfield residents Dale Whittaker, a watercolor painter, and Mary Whittaker, a textile and quilt artist. The exhibition traces the couple’s journey to Bayfield and their creative work.
Both the ribbon-cutting ceremony and reception are free and open to the public.
Island Gateway occupies a restored building in the Bayfield Historic District that sat largely vacant for several years. Designed by AWH Architects of Minneapolis, the restoration and adaptive reuse project received support from the Wisconsin Economic Development Corp. The project brings two businesses and a year-round residence to Second Street while returning a significant downtown building to active use.
Island Gateway combines a fine art gallery featuring artists and makers from the Lake Superior region with a gathering space for quilting, textile arts and handwork programs. The gallery presents rotating exhibitions and public opening receptions.
Beginning in winter 2027, Mary Whittaker plans to host small-group quilting and handwork retreats, with lodging available through Bayfield-area partners.
“Art has always been one of the most powerful ways people learn, restore and find each other,” Mary Whittaker said. “We wanted Island Gateway to be a place where all three happen — where someone can stand in front of a painting and find their sense of wonder widened, sit down at a sewing machine and discover something about themselves, or share a table with strangers who become friends. This community deserves a space built around that.”
The gallery’s inaugural season has included “Dark Sky, Star Bright,” presented in partnership with Friends of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, and “Lake Superior Kinship,” featuring paintings and illustrations by Madeline Island artists Lance Wurst and Sarah Holst.
The season will conclude with “Stitch and Resist,” a juried fiber art exhibition scheduled for Sept. 12-20 during Bayfield Art Escape.
“Here, Finally” will be on display Aug. 13-31. Gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Monday.
