Professional Insurance Agents of Wisconsin: Callahan named Assembly recipient of 2025 Legislative Excellence Award

Madison, WI – The Professional Insurance Agents of Wisconsin (PIA) is pleased to announce Representative Calvin Callahan (R – Tomahawk) as the Assembly recipient of PIA’s 2025 Legislative Excellence Award, in honor of his leadership in authoring key legislation to protect Wisconsin’s consumers and the independent insurance channel.

Rep. Callahan led as the Assembly author of PIA priority legislation, Senate Bill 531, which addresses post-loss Assignment of Benefits (AOB) contracts. The bill establishes reasonable guardrails around AOB agreements, helping protect the integrity of insurance contracts while safeguarding consumers from abusive or misleading practices. It passed both the Assembly and Senate on a bipartisan basis near the end of the 2025-2026 Legislative session.

In authoring this legislation and in his role as Vice-Chair of the Assembly Committee on Insurance, Rep. Callahan has proven a strong ability to work collaboratively with stakeholders and fellow lawmakers in pursuit of an insurance environment that is favorable for Wisconsin’s consumers.

PIA’s Legislative Committee members, Ken Werner Jr., CIC and Christian Montezon visited the State Capitol on April 8th to present Rep. Callahan with his award, joined by PIA’s Executive Director Pete Hanson and Communications Director Natalie White.

“Representative Callahan showed real leadership in taking on a complex issue and working toward a solution that benefits both consumers and the insurance marketplace,” said Pete Hanson, Executive Director of PIA of Wisconsin. “Our agents are thankful for his efforts to protect their clients and the integrity of insurance contracts in Wisconsin.”

Senate Bill 531 was signed into law by Governor Evers as Wisconsin Act 230 later that day.

PIA’s Legislative Excellence Award is presented annually to one member of both the Wisconsin State Senate and Assembly who demonstrate support for PIA priority legislation, independent insurance agents, and a healthy insurance system.
