Milwaukee County Has Invested More Than Half a Billion Dollars in Its Public Museum. The Collections It Protected Have Never Been Priced.
SaveMPM.org analysis traces fifty years of County spending, from a $10.8 million purchase in 1976 to $45 million in new-building bonds
MILWAUKEE, Oct. 9, 2026 — Since buying the Milwaukee Public Museum from the City of Milwaukee in 1976, Milwaukee County taxpayers have invested an estimated $293 to $302 million in it, or $557 to $589 million in today’s dollars, according to a new analysis by SaveMPM.org.
The figure draws on the museum’s own annual reports, County budget records, and public testimony. It covers the 1976 purchase of the land, building, and equipment for $10.8 million; sixteen years as a County department, when tax dollars supplied 68% to 88% of museum revenue; more than $160 million in operating support after MPM, Inc. took over management in 1992; at least $15 million in building repairs that MPM’s own Chief Planning Officer acknowledged to County supervisors in March 2022; and $45 million in bonds for the new museum.
The total leaves out the most valuable thing the County owns: the collections. When the museum changed hands in 1976, no dollar value was placed on its millions of specimens, artifacts, and dioramas. They have never appeared on any ledger since. Soon they pass into the care of a new nonprofit, the Nature & Culture Museum of Wisconsin, even though Milwaukee County still owns them.
“Taxpayers spent half a billion dollars protecting these collections, and nobody ever wrote down what they are worth,” said SaveMPM.org. “Priceless cannot mean worthless on paper. Without a verified inventory and some measure of value, the public has no way to know whether what it paid for arrives intact.”
A 2005 County audit counted 6.5 million artifacts. Current reports put the collection at 4 to 4.5 million. SaveMPM.org is asking the Milwaukee County Board to require a complete, County-verified inventory before the collections move.
