Protect Our Care: New KFF poll: Health care costs take center stage for MAHA voters

A new poll from KFF is the writing on the wall for Republicans: ignore the cost of health care at your own peril. The cost of health care is front and center for voters, including MAHA voters, heading into November, as Americans across party lines are increasingly frustrated with the price of care and are demanding action. Even key parts of Trump and RFK’s base are souring as costs rise and promises fall flat, underscoring just how politically dangerous this issue has become.
After Donald Trump and Republicans slashed more than $1 trillion from Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act to fund tax breaks for billionaires and big corporations, millions have lost coverage, and costs have skyrocketed for even more. Hard-working families are facing impossible decisions between putting food on the table, filling their cars with gas, or keeping life-saving coverage.

But even as families are struggling, Republicans are prioritizing billions for Trump’s ballroom, more wars, ICE, and even more billionaire tax breaks, leaving Americans to scrape by. Voters are paying attention, and they know who ripped away coverage and sent their costs soaring. In November, the verdict will be clear:

55% say the cost of health care will have a “major impact” on their decision to vote, including

  • 52% of Independents
  • 48% of Republicans
  • 51% of MAHA voters

61% say the cost of health care will have a “major impact” on which candidate they support, including

  • 63% of Independents
  • 47% of Republicans
  • 56% of MAHA voters

Lowering the cost of health care is the most important priority for MAHA Voters (42%), even as RFK Jr. decimates health care for the American people.

MAHA voters give the Trump administration low ratings on two key areas of the MAHA agenda:

  • Only 38% approve of the administration’s handling of vaccine policy
  • Fewer than half, 46%, approve of their handling of food policy
