MADISON — Gov. Tony Evers today announced his appointment of former Wisconsin State Assembly Representative Sondy Pope to the Wisconsin Technical College System (WTCS) Board. Pope will replace Dr. Quincey L. Daniels Jr., who resigned from the board on July 15, 2026. Pope will serve for the remainder of Dr. Daniels’ term, which expires May 1, 2029.
“Sondy has been a champion for Wisconsin public education for decades, and I’m looking forward to seeing her continue her advocacy for our technical colleges. The board’s work is critical to ensuring our technical colleges maintain their leading status as premier higher education institutions that prepare our kids to join our state’s workforce. Sondy’s wide breadth of experience and dedicated commitment to public education will make her an exceptional addition to the board,” said Gov. Evers. “It’s important to me that board members are committed to upholding the mission of our technical colleges by ensuring that we can support our students and build a 21st-century workforce Wisconsin needs to support a 21st-century economy, and I know Sondy will work hard to do what’s best for our students, faculty, and staff.”
First elected in 2002, Pope served in the Wisconsin State Legislature for 20 years. Pope represented the 79th Assembly District and later the 80th Assembly District. As a legislator, she served on the Assembly Committee on Education in every session, including serving as chair and as ranking member. Pope also served in several other committee assignments, including Corrections and the Courts, Aging and Long-Term Care, and Consumer Protection.
“I am sincerely grateful to Gov. Evers for this appointment to the Wisconsin Technical College System Board and welcome this opportunity as a continuation of my decades-long commitment to education,” said Pope. “The WTCS Board mission of education that is student-centered reflects my beliefs and philosophy perfectly. I have been a witness and participant in the many shifts of education in Wisconsin and look forward to an involvement at this level. As the world economy and ever-changing technologies evolve and shift, it is vitally important that Wisconsin is prepared to provide high-quality, relevant opportunities for the future of our workforce.”
During her years in the Legislature, she served on a broad range of task forces and study committees, including the Wisconsin Blue Ribbon Commission on School Funding, the Assembly Speaker’s Task Force on Rural Education, the Assembly Speaker’s Task Force on Urban Education, and the Assembly Speaker’s Task Force on Water Quality. Throughout her career as a lawmaker, she maintained a passion for education and for education funding in particular. Pope was also a commissioner of the Midwestern Higher Education Compact and a Bowhay Institute Center for Policy Alternatives fellow. Upon retiring from the Legislature, she was appointed to the University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics Authority Board and the Wisconsin State Historical Society Board of Curators.
