MILWAUKEE – Today Brad Schimel, candidate for Wisconsin Supreme Court, released an ad claiming that, when it comes to rulings on abortion, he “will respect the will of the people.” The ad seems to deviate from his established track record on abortion, which includes signing a white paper celebrating Wisconsin’s dangerous 1849 abortion ban, sending his Solicitor General to a conference to strategize on overturning Roe v. Wade during his time as Wisconsin Attorney General, and saying as recently as May 2024 that he is “firmly pro-life.” Schimel’s campaign has been supported by the leadership of Pro-Life Wisconsin, a group that opposes all abortion, including in cases of rape and incest. In response to Schimel’s ad, Dr. Shefaali Sharma, an OB/GYN in Madison, released the following statement:
“Doctors are deeply concerned that Brad Schimel is attempting to mislead Wisconsinites with this ad about his extremist anti-abortion record. Schimel has a long and clear track record of supporting Wisconsin’s dangerous 1849 abortion ban and working to strip away reproductive rights. Doctors know how important abortion access is to patients’ health, safety and privacy, and we know that Wisconsinites want personal medical decisions to remain between doctors and patients. It’s alarming that Mr. Schimel would try to deceive Wisconsinites on such a critical issue of health and freedom. Our message to our fellow Wisconsinites is clear: When it comes to Brad Schimel’s record on abortion, it’s extreme and dangerous. Don’t be fooled.”
