Strong Schools, Strong Community: Announces second student co-chair

Madison, Wis. – Today, with less than 40 days until Election Day, the Strong Schools, Strong Community campaign is announcing its second student co-chair. Aharon Shelef, a senior at West High School, will be leading the campaign alongside a robust bench of co-chairs: Representative Francesca Hong, Ruben Anthony, Sandy Morales, Jeff Mack, Jane Belmore, Pablo Baxter, and fellow student co-chair Wyatt Milewski.

Shelef, President of the West High School Green Club, has joined as co-chair to underscore the impact these investments will have on the sustainability of MMSD buildings and the students who are served by them everyday. He shared that:

“Students across MMSD are counting on community members to vote ‘YES’ on the district’s operations and facilities referenda, not only because they are a necessary investment in our public education, but also because urgent school sustainability renovations are critical to giving students a future where we can thrive. The due date for climate action is approaching, and the planet will not accept late work.”

West High School is one of five schools that received significant renovations thanks to the investments the Madison community made by voting ‘YES’ on the 2020 operating and facilities referenda. This November 5, folks will again choose what they want the future of public education in Madison to look like.

The 2024 MMSD operations referenda will improve student achievement by ensuring students, staff, and teachers needs are met by providing critical investments into hiring and retaining more world class educators across the district, expand services to address students critical mental health concerns, grow the all day 4K program, and create well rounded opportunities for all students.

The facilities referenda will modernize educational spaces in 10 schools across the district by addressing pressing safety and accessibility compliance issues as well as creating flexible spaces for learning.
