Bayfield, Wis. (Jan. 5, 2024) – Mt. Ashwabay Outdoor Recreation Area is thrilled to announce the opening of some Alpine terrain this weekend. Thanks to the dedication and hard work of the snow-making team and snowcat drivers, both the paddle tow and chairlift will be operational starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, January 6.
“Our efforts have focused on ensuring excellent skiing conditions on the open terrain, including the beginner area, Jerry’s Run, and Little Joe. This ski season has presented unique challenges, with the entire snow sports industry grappling with an unusual weather pattern. Despite the hurdles, we are excited to provide our visitors with a fantastic skiing experience this weekend,” said Doug Olson, outdoor recreation program director for the ski hill.
Mt. Ashwabay offers 12 Alpine runs spanning over 65 acres and more than 40km of cross-country ski trails. The Mt. Ashwabay team is eagerly anticipating snowfall for Nordic ski trails.
“While the 10-day forecast shows promise, we remain cautious and prepared for any changes in weather conditions. Our dedicated equipment and grooming staff are standing by, ready to take action when Mother Nature cooperates,” said Olson.
Beyond skiing, staff has observed a surge in outdoor enthusiasts exploring the forest surrounding the ski area. Hikers and mountain bikers have been enjoying the beautiful surroundings, adding to the vibrant atmosphere of Mt. Ashwabay.
Volunteers have played a significant role in enhancing Mt. Ashwabay’s offerings during the mild weather. In two days, volunteers cleared the forest adjacent to the beginner’s area, resulting in a stunning playground for children. During the second volunteer day, a dedicated crew created “glade” skiing terrain for advanced skiers.
“Mt. Ashwabay remains committed to providing an exceptional winter sports experience, and we invite everyone to join us this weekend for an exciting adventure on our freshly opened Alpine terrain,” said Olson.
